Fighting raged in eastern Ukraine as Russian forces renewed their efforts to advance there after retreating from the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson.
The loss of Kherson—the only regional capital seized by Russia since it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February—was a major blow for Moscow, which claimed to have absorbed the Kherson region into its own territory in September. But the retreat has also freed up about 20,000 troops for Russia to redeploy to other fronts, including in the eastern Donetsk region.
