While planning for his accession to the throne, the future King Charles III made a request: that for the first time in British history his proclamation as king be televised live to the world.

The decision to beam the images of the king speaking at the accession council at St James’s Palace on Saturday is part of a wider plan to usher in a more visible, informal and nimble monarchy, according to palace officials.
